Timeless Tech Support

Tuesday – 9PM. A grave warning flashed up on my computer screen. “Primary EIDE drive is operating outside normal parameters. Back-up immediately. Replace hard drive.” My computer was crashing and so was my ability to accomplish the week’s To Do List. No more e-mail. No more progress on work or school projects. No more accomplishing anything that mattered.

Suddenly, I realized how dependent I’d become on the computer for numerous aspects of my life. In that moment I also discovered how dangerous it is to depend on the wrong thing or person when you’re trying to accomplish anything significant.

That’s true whether you’re talking about homework, office work or your life work. Sometimes people think they can accomplish their life’s purpose by depending on extensive education, a fast-track career or high-powered relationships. However, these often turn out to be tragically powerless.

Twenty years ago I depended totally on my career for self worth and purpose. Then one day, out of the blue, my boss called me into her office and threatened to fire me if “things didn’t improve.” Talk about life crisis! Since my career was everything to me then, I had an “everything crisis.” I didn’t get fired, but I did get a wake-up call — Lesson 101 in “What Not to Depend On.”

So what or who can we depend on? Jesus Christ and His voice to us — the Bible. Jesus promises that those who believe in Him as their personal God or Savior can depend on Him for everything. Looking for wisdom to handle a situation? “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt…” (James 1:5-6) Looking to have a full, meaningful life? Jesus says, “I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.” (John 10:10) Want less stress? “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7) Want to know how to do things in your life that really matter? Stick like glue to Jesus. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit. Apart from me you can do nothing.”

That’s where I was Tuesday night — accomplishing nothing because I had depended on my computer and it was failing me. Jesus Christ never fails and will never fail you. The same message echoes throughout the Bible. To all who seek and follow Him wholeheartedly, God says, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6 and Hebrews 13:5) “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20) That beats any guarantee I ever got from Tech. Support! On who or what are you depending and is it time for a change?
